Split – a city which the Roman Emperor Diocletian chose as his “incentive travel destination” over 1700 years ago, and which the present-day residents are famous for claiming is “the most beautiful city in the world.”
The Roman Emperor Diocletian was the city’s first resident. He began building his palace in this attractive bay as early as 293. After abdicating, he retired here, in his luxurious palace stretching out over 30,000m2. This ancient heart of the city of Split is one of the more well preserved of the Roman imperial residences in the world, which is why the entire historic centre of Split, “Diocletian’s Palace”, has been registered in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List.
The real greatness of Split does not lie in the fact that it grew out of the palace of a Roman emperor, but rather that the palace lives on in the city today. History is a part of everyday life here, which can be seen in the laundry residents hang to dry without a second thought through windows facing city monuments.
